Health Requirements & Eligibility

Horses must meet the health requirements listed in Afton Fair Premium Book as well as the Eligibility requirements.

Open Horse Show - General Rules

  1. Current Coggins this year or previous year (2007 and 2008) and found to be negative for EIA infection is required of all equine 6 months of age and older. The animal identification noted on all accompanying documents must match the description on the official EIA chart. A copy of the Coggins Test must accompany each horse entered in the show.
    • Out of State Horses: Horses 6 months of age or older must test negative for equine infectious anemia. The test must be conducted with in 12 months of the date of entry. The horse must be clearly and completely identified.
    • Rabies vaccination is required for all horses over 105 days of age. (See Animal Health Requirements for 2008)
    • All animals entering the Afton Fair grounds must have a veterinary certificate proving active immunization against Rabies was given a minimum of 14 days before the opening day of the fair and no more that 1 year before the date of the show.
  2. No stallions in Junior classes.
  3. Judges decision is final. Any discourtesy to the judge or committee members will be cause for dismissal from the grounds.
  4. Management reserves the right to cancel or combine any classes that do not fill.
  5. Points are based on Horse/rider combination. Each new horse/rider combination must enter under a different number. Day-end champions are based on horse/rider combination.
  6. Senior Games, Equitation, Reinsmanship, Horsemanship and Showmanship classes do not pay money.
  7. Entry fee is $5.00 per class before the deadline of July 3, 2008. Post deadline entries will be $7.00 the day of the show.
  8. Prize money will be mailed to all winners. No cash will be awarded at the show. All premium checks must be cashed within 60 days of the closing of the Afton Fair. If not cashed, said monies will be considered the property of Afton Driving Park & Agricultural Association, Inc.
  9. Premiums: First - $15.00; Second - $10.00; Third - $5.00, Fourth - $3.00. Less than 8 entries will be sweep staked.
  10. Scratches and additions to classes must be made 2 classes before the class affected.
  11. The Afton Driving Park and Agriculture Association, Inc., East Rider 4-H Club and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County will not be responsible for any accident, injury or loss to any horse, rider or spectator.
  12. All Junior riders, age of 18 and under, must wear approved hard hats.
  13. Junior Riders age as of December 1, 2007 shall determine division per TVHA. Senior Riders age as of January 1, 2008
  14. Leadline - Person leading must be 13 years of age or older. Any child under the age of 4 years must have a spotter.
  15. Driving Classes are cart or carriage.
  16. Green Horse is a horse in the 1st or 2nd year under saddle in that seat under any rider.
  17. Disciplined Rail - Not a game or fault and out class. Final judging shall be on the over all disciplined rail performance and manners. The class routine shall be to perform work on the rail, and may include, but is not limited to: extension or collection at the walk, trot or canter; simple changes of lead; square halt; starting into a canter from a halt; etc.
  18. Pre-entries will have a shorter wait the day of the show.
  19. No entry refunds without written Vet/Doctor excuse.
  20. Proper attire required for all classes.
  21. Senior Games Classes are for individuals 55 or older. Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals will be awarded in the following age divisions: 55 - 65, 66 - 75, and 75 +. Entry Fee $10 for all classes and includes a T-shirt. Co Sponsorship by Broome Co. Office for the Aging will be confirmed by May 1 2008. Entry forms will be available on this website at that time.
  22. The Driving Groom's Obstacale class is a timed course for the grooms to ride on the cart/carriage to various obstacles/activities that must be completed.
