2008 Afton Fair Harness Racing:

Copyright © The Afton Fair.
The tradition of harness racing continues at The Afton Fair this year on Thursday, July 9. We will have a full program including county fair races with two and three year old trotters and pacers, a race with older trotters and pacers and, for a return engagement, The Billings Amateur Trot.
During the races we will again have our "Pick The Winner" game where one lucky person can win $5.00 during each race just by choosing the lucky winner. The winner is drawn from all correct answers. Our audience has enjoyed this immensely in past years.
We will also feature an exhibit from The Hall of Fame of The Trotter in Goshen, New York which showcases harness racing from its start. This is a beautiful set of large posters that will be on display for the entire week of the fair. We hope to encourage all to learn more about harness racing and hopefully become a racing fan.
Look for many other promotions during the fair which will focus on the sport of harness racing. Come and enjoy the races and our country fair.

In order to bring an animal or animals onto any fairgrounds in New York State, the animals must meet health guidelines determined by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. These guidelines are updated yearly and are available on the Afton Fair Website in PDF format at: www.theaftonfair.com/fariregs.pdf and as web pages. You can browse the guidelines by starting at: www.theaftonfair.com/animal-health.shtml. If you plan on bringing animals to exhibit or compete at the Afton Fair please make sure that you have reviewed the guidelines and that your animals meet the requirements. Animals that do not meet the guideline requirements will not be allowed to stay on the Fairgrounds.
If you have any questions about these guidelines, please contact your veterinarian or call us 607-639-1525 and we will be happy to help in any way we can.

2008 Afton Fair Open Horse Show:

Copyright © The Afton Fair.
Horse show days at the 2009 Afton Fair are Saturday and Sunday, July 11 and 12. On Saturday the English and Western shows pointed by the Tri-Valley Horseman's Association will be held. Last year*s show was the largest since horse shows returned to the Afton Fair in 2004. The leadline class and walk/trot adult classes were great. Several of our walk/trot riders were in their first show.
New in 2008 was the Sunday show that included three shows in one! We had a great turn out for our first Miniature Show, Driving Show and Equestrian Senior Games (Driving). The mini*s were flying over the jumps and fearless at the obstacles. The whips showed off their skills in the Reinsmanship classes and were guiding their horses through the obstacle course. The newest part of the Afton Fair Horse Show was the Equestrian Senior Games Division (Driving) co-sponsored by the Broome County Office for Aging. This was the first Equestrian Senior Games in NYS and the first show for 72 year old Sam Hayslip.
The new arena with bleachers for spectators under the pavilion has been a great success. Thanks to a donation from Warren's Gravel Pit and work by Henry Schoelier, the footing in the ring is getting better each year. The new PA system, purchased by the Afton Fair Board, made it possible for riders to hear announcements anywhere in the show ring and parking area.
The class line up in 2009 for the English and Western Shows has remained the same as in 2008. Changes in the class line up for the Miniature, Driving and Senior Games include the addition of classes for miniature multi-color mares, gleldings & stallions, miniature solid-colored mares, geldings and stallions and championship mares, geldings and stallions. The Senior Games classes have been split by age categories: 55 - 64, 65 - 74, and 75 and older.
For full details on the classes for the Open Horse Shows please visit: www.theaftonfair.com/horseshow.shtml where you can review the show rules and regulations and download entry forms and class lists as needed. A PDF of the 2008 English and Western Shows winners for each class, some pictures from the 2008 show as well as a list of our generous sponsors is also available.
