A major sponsor of the 2009 Afton Fair:

We are happy to welcome The Southerntiersmen Barbershop Chorus and Quartets to the Afton Fair.
The Southerntiersmen are the award winning, Binghamton Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. This society was born in April 1938 and is the largest all male singing fraternity in the world. The Binghamton Chapter was chartered in 1943, being the society’s twenty-ninth chapter and the third chapter in New York State.
Over the years the Southerntiersmen have earned the right to represent upstate New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania in international competition six times (in 1962, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1979). They have placed as high as eighth and ninth in these contests that feature the best choruses in the world. They were the 2007 Seneca land District Champions.

Anyone who has entered a competition at the Afton Fair in the past is probably aware of the Afton Fair Premium Book.
Due to a desire to save natural resources and time, we opted not to produce the Premium Book this year. In the past we have thrown away hundreds of unused books. This is a horrible waste.
I have been working on putting all Premium Book information on our web site. This is an enormous task so there is the possibility that some forms and documents have been missed.
Please check for the forms you are looking for on our web site either on the section for the event you are interested in, or at the forms page of the web site. If the information you need is not available, please contact me by email, or call the fair office at 607-639-1525. When calling please make sure you leave a message if no one answers.
The fair office is currently open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 AM to Noon. The office hours will be extended during the last week of June.

This year the Afton Fair is reaching out to youth to visit the fair on Harness Racing Day to participate in special activities.
There will be a coloring contest with pre-printed harness racing coloring sheets with two options to choose from. Children can choose their favorite coloring page, color it and enter their masterpiece into the contest. Coloring sheets will be available at Harpursville Farm and Garden, at the Afton Fair Office, on our web site as well as other locations.
There will be 3 winning entries chosen in 5 age groups. Each winner shares the winner’s circle and gets a picture with a horse and driver during the Harness Racing event. The fifteen winners will also be entered into a drawing to win a coupon for one wristband for rides at The Afton Fair redeemable for Thursday (5PM - 9PM), Friday (5PM - 9PM), Saturday (1PM - 5PM) or Sunday (1PM - 5PM). Coupon is not transferable and cannot be used for the Saturday Super Saver Special ride deal. The drawing will be done near the end of the Harness Racing Event on Thursday, July 9. Child must be present to win.
Additionally, the first 200 youth to attend the Afton Fair Racing Day will receive a bookmark that can be redeemed at the Harness Racing Museum Display for an Activity Book produced by the Unites States Trotting Association. This is an educational book that teaches about the history of Harness Racing and the Standardbred horse.
For complete details about the Afton Fair Harness Racing Special Children’s Activities, including important rules and requirements to be eligible to win, age groups and a full list of locations where the coloring sheet can be found, please visit our web site: [Harness Racing Special Children's Activities]
Best of luck to you!

JD Winslow Equestrian Entertainment
© Copyright, JD Winslow, used with permission. The Afton Fair welcomes JD Winslow for four shows where a variety of riding skills will be demonstrated in an entertaining and educational display.
Draft horses such as the American Belgian are used for freestyle vaulting displays where the horse runs free of harness or surcingle. This particular type of riding is best described as trick riding with circus style and grace.
A pair of Brabants, a breed of draft horse that were known as the great war horse of medieval times, are used to demonstrate a unique form of Roman Riding. These magnificent horses are the heaviest and largest of the draft horse breeds.
JD Winslow will perform on Thursday, July 9 at 4:00 PM, Friday, July 10 at 7:00 PM and Saturday, July 11 at 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM at the grandstand. The shows are free with paid gate admission. For more information please visit the JD Winslow Equestrian Entertainment website.
