Health Requirements & Eligibility

Dairy cattle must meet the health requirements listed in Afton Fair Premium Book.

Rules for the Youth Dairy Show

  1. All entries must follow State health guidelines listed in the General Health Requirements section.
  2. Each exhibitor shall present a health certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian. The health check must be completed prior to fair. The beef superintendent will check papers on arrival to the fairgrounds.
  3. Ownership is required by June 1 of the current year. All animals must be personally owned and registered individually; dual ownership, family ownership or syndicates are not allowed.
  4. All animals must be purebred and papers must be available for inspection.
  5. Exhibitors are limited to not more than two entries in each class.
  6. All hay and bedding must be furnished by the exhibitor.
  7. All animals must be housed in places assigned by the dairy cattle superintendent.
  8. Herdsmanship will be conducted. A cash prize will be awarded to the best exhibit covering the entire period of the fair, taking into account the following:
    • Personal Appearance - in and out of the show ring.
    • Neatness and Cleanliness of exhibit.
    • Cooperation with the superintendent and others.
  9. Exhibitors must show their own animals:
    • If an exhibitor has two entries in a class the second entry must be shown by another youth who is exhibiting in the show.
    • In emergency situations exceptions can be made, but arrangements must be cleared with the dairy cattle superintendent.
    • Youths having a conflict with school or work does not constitute an emergency situation. Where a violation occurs, premiums will be withdrawn.
    • Exhibitors are encouraged to prepare their won animal for show and should maintain the Youth exhibit area. Adults should not be seen doing this work.
  10. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place.

Championship Awards - Ribbons for the Junior and Senior Champion and Reserve Champion and Grand Champion females of each breed will be presented. All first and second place animals with blue ribbons may compete for these ribbons. The Grand Champion Female of each breed will compete for a Grand Champion Female of All Breeds.

97. Novice Showmanship - any youth showing dairy for the first time
98. Jr. Showmanship - 12 years of age and under.
99. Sr. Showmanship - 13 years and over.
